Understanding your Seed Purchase: Quality, Pricing, and Tags

Recognizing seed quality is essential for making informed purchasing decisions. By understanding seed testing, labeling, and pricing, you can confidently choose the best seed for your intended use.

What is a seed test?

Seed testing facilities analyze seed quality using three primary tests:

  • Purity Test: Determines the percentage of pure seeds compared to inert matter, weeds, or other crops
  • Germination Test: Measures the percentage of seeds expected to sprout
  • Tetrazolium (TZ) Test: A quick viability test that can estimate live seed before germination results are available

The results of these tests are then compiled into a document used to record seed quality. This document can be used to influence purchasing and pricing decisions.

What is Pure Live Seed (PLS)?

Pure Live Seed (PLS) refers to the amount of viable seed relative to the total quantity. It is calculated using the following formula:

Purity% x Germination%

This measurement helps to compare the quality of different seed lots.

What is a PLS pound?

Bulk pounds represent the weight of the entire product, including any non-viable or inert matter, whereas PLS pounds include only the weight of the Pure Live Seed. This can be found by multiplying the number of bulk pounds by the PLS percentage.

What is PLS pricing?

Seed quality is essential for determining PLS pricing. This price can be found using the following formula:

Bulk Price per Pound ÷ PLS%

This amount represents the price per pound of seed capable of germinating. This price reflects the value and quality rather than the amount of seed you receive.
