A shrub commonly found up to 7,000 ft. in elevation throughout the western United States. Depending on the type, it may be as short as 8 inches or as tall as 12 ft. It has been important to Native Americans as medicine, a source of yellow dye, and fuel for fire. Palatability is generally poor for livestock, but provides moderate palatability and valuable cover for wildlife.
