Curl mountain mahogany is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to 35’ tall and is found in elevations up to 9,800 ft. Plants grow slowly and may not reach full height until they are 100 years old or more. It is the most widely distributed of the mountain mahoganies. It grows in areas receiving between 14”-24” of precipitation in rocky, mountainous habitats. The bark is deep and furrowed. The root system is shallow and spreads widely. Seeds require cold moist stratification for germination. It is an important and very palatable winter browse.
