A long-lived shrub that grows from 2’ – 15’ in height. It normally occurs in upper sagebrush, juniper zones. It has long taproots. It grows fairly rapidly and provides an important source of food and cover for small animals. Flowers are small, varying from white to yellow. Seeds are large, and seeds, stems, and leaves are non-toxic. Found from lower elevations up to 10,000 ft. normally in a mixed shrub community. A cold moist stratification period of up to six weeks may be required to obtain good germination and so it is normally seeded in the late fall-winter.
